Hinges on the idea that photography possessed singular essential art, clothcourt-nature deemed to characterize the medium while images attempt to imitate paintings.
Photo works of this kind is preoccupied with issues of form to the exclusion of texture (sometimes, problematically, identified with content) worked best when form did not get in the way of practical image subject, as a medium to the exclusion of wider patterns of social value or computer screen savers. This emphasis was often tempered by the recognition that photographic form is tied to its subject.
In this peculiar art form and subject are defined simultaneously. Even more than traditional arts, the two are inextricably tangled. Indeed they probably are the same issues; subject is not the starting point but its destination.
The resemblance of things depicted in these photographs caused by traces of light bouncing off those objects depicted. These photographs maybe a document or whatever art you want to call it. Because of over-attention to form, there is a great deal to be learned from serious reflection on image form. Example much of what innovative photographs produced in this collection was the gift of the subject – form itself once found.
